Matthew Williamson
Matthew Williamson was born in Manchester, England in 1972. After graduating from St. Martin's
College in London, he began his life quite early with a back-packing tour of Mexico and Guatemala in
South America. When he was there, he soaked up the colours and designs and created a very brilliant colour
palette for him which became quite useful for him later on in his life. He made 17 trips to India learning
techniques for the more intricate embroidery that features in his work. Alongside these trips, he also worked
as a freelance designer for highstreet English shop Monsoon for two years.
In 1996, Matthew Williamson launched his very own label, exhibiting a big collection of fluid, bias-cut
dresses and skirts as well as some cashmere twinsets. The use of sweaters over such dresses suggested a very
nonchalant kind of glamour, which allowed his clothes to pass smoothly from day all the way into evening wear. He
called his first collection "Electric Angels", and every piece was handcrafted.
Filmy fabrics, dusky pastels, lots of pretty details, delicate lace and opalescent organza thick with embroidery,
scattered with beads are the kind of very dainty garments that are so popular with Mathew Williamson's fashion
clientele.
In the autumn of 2001, Mathew Williamson decided to open his first boutique in the City of London.
Matthew Williamson also decided to present his Spring/Summer 2003 collection at the New York Fashion
Week during September of the year of 2002, which received much public acclaim.
Matthew Williamson also presented a very successful knitwear collection for the Scottish cashmere company
Ballantyne which is also a conservative traditional brand which asked for Williamson to pep things
up a little with his remarkable taste for fashion.
