Kate Spade
Born and bred in Kansas City, Missouri, Katherine Noel Brosnahan, now known as Kate
Spade, was both the epitome and antithesis of the all-american girl. She is thought of in that manner because
she is familiar yet wonderfully and especially original. Whether it is her fresh and unique sense of style,
or her singular personality; both reflect a keen sense of wit, propriety, and a no-nonsense approach to life.
Kate Spade has spent most of her professional career in the accessories business.
After graduating from college in 1986, Kate Spade found a job at Mademoiselle magazine, leaving them in 1991
with the title of senior fashion editor/head of accessories. Whilst working there, Kate Spade felt that the market
lacked some stylish, practical handbags. She therefore began designing her own. Spade put together some sketches,
investigated production costs, and created a line of classically shaped bags in sleek satin-finished nylon, as
well as interesting colors and fabrics. Hoping for the best, Kate, along with her husband, Andy Spade, launched
"Kate Spade handbags" in january of 1993.
Three years later, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) honored Kate Spade's classic designs by
awarding her as America's new fashion talent in trendy accessories. Kate was honored once again by the CFDA in
1998, as best accessory designer of the year. In 1999, Kate Spade was honored a third time when her handbags were
exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt Museum for the first national design triennial, celebrating american design and
excellence. For her new home collection, a project which came into being later on, Kate Spade was presented
with three prestigious design awards in 2004: House Beautiful's Giants of Design award for tastemaker, Bon
Appetit's american food & entertaining award for designer of the year, and Elle Decor's International Design
award for bedding.
