fighting on the Russian front, whilst her mother had fled from the bombing in Hamburg. She later on studied textile design at Krefeld
School of Textiles in Germany, before spending a year as an exchange student at the University of Los Angeles, in California during
the years between 1963-4. She then became a journalist for McCalls magazine in the USA, and several German women's magazines before
turning to freelance clothing design.
In 1968, Jil Sander opened her own boutique in Hamburg, Germany, displaying her first collection in 1974. She also has several boutiques in
Paris, London, New York and many other major cities throughout the world. In 1989, her company went on the Stock exchange as a public limited
company.
In 1999, The Jil Sander company was purchased by the House of Prada.
The Style of Jil Sander
Jil Sander found a need for understated, minimalistic clothes which had a sense of inner feminine self-confidence, but which would at the
same time provide the wearer with the best kind of fit, quality and modernity.
Her minimalist style quickly gained popularity on the international market. She combined the simplicity of male garments with a feminine sense of
high-quality and luxurious fabrics. Her clothes were synonymous with ultra-modern sensuality that was technical as well as beautiful.
Jil Sander also experimented with new kinds of materials such as silver-laminated linen, which she found to be far more subtle than
straightforward silver colour.
