Gerolamo Etro
Gerolamo (Gimmo) Etro was born in 1940 in Milan, Italy. He married his wife Roberta in 1960 and had three sons with her, named
Ippolito, Jacopo and Kean (born 1964), as well as a daughter Veronica born in 1974.
Gimmo traveled extensively during the early 1960's throughout the Far East and North Africa, collecting sumptuous designs which would be suitable
for silks, cashmere, linens as well as other fabrics.
He then returned to Milan and in 1968 set up Etro initially specializing in womenswear. He designed such esquisite creations that haute
couture houses and designers such as Giorgio Armani, Thierry Muglier and Christian Lacroix bought from him very regularly. In the
1980's he also set up his menswear lines and in 1981 he set up his home furnishing fabric line.
When Gerolamo Etro's four children became adults, the Etro name became a huge international success that it still is today, making
soft home furnishings, haute couture clothes, shoes, handbags, perfumes.
Etro's son Kean designs the menswear, Ippolito (who graduated from the University of London) manages finance, Jacopo looks after the accessories
and home collections, and since Fall 2000 Veronica designs the womenswear lines, having studied fashion at Central St. Martins College in London.
Veronica is also a very talented photographer, and has exhibited her work at the Photographers Annual Exhibition in London.
Gerolamo Etro still manages to maintain a strong hand on the company and a watchful eye on the companie's activities.
Etro mostly make superb garments in very luxurious fabrics, but their advertisements are sometimes rather quirky featuring odd images such
as bird heads on top of the bodies of beautiful women.
