Dries Van Noten
Born in Anvers, Belgium in 1958, Dries Van Noten studied fashion at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Arts, graduating in 1981.
Four years following his graduation, Dries Van Noten started his own company and began designing womens wear. The following year, he showed
his collection in London. He very quickly received orders from Barney's in New York, Whistles of London and Pauw of Amsterdam.
In 1988 he received the Award of the Flemish Community for the entirety of his work. During the same year, he started selling his creations in
Japan.
Dries Van Noten also started his Mens collection in Paris in 1991 , and his Womens wear in 1993.
He is definitely a minimalist who favours spare lines and dark colour palettes. Van Noten has also built up a large following in
Belgium, now also attracting a high fashion international attention.
Dries Van Noten clothing tends to use figure-defining fabrics such as jersey and silk knits and is also known for layering jackets over
dresses and trousers. He also produces sleek suits with jackets buttoned diagonally, long duster coats as well as matte sequined evening
dresses.
Dries Van Noten is known for his eclectic use of themes. Very eclectic prints and embroidery tend to decorate Eastern and Western garments, and
you could therefore easily see a sarong being placed over trousers or a sari under a double-breasted jacket!
